Project Background 

The North District at the University of California, Riverside is a transformative expansion of campus housing and student amenities, designed to support the university’s growing enrollment and enhance the student experience. North District Phase 2 builds on the success of the initial phase, providing modern living spaces, collaborative environments, and integrated support services for undergraduate and graduate students. 

North District 2 represents a first-of-its-kind intermingling of undergraduate and graduate university students with transfer-bound community college students.  Reaching seven stories with seven different floor plans and 1500+ beds, this resource-rich community is designed to break down physical and psychological barriers to access, success, and equity. The project introduces new residential communities, flexible study areas, and vibrant social spaces. The project is centered on student well-being, sustainability, and academic achievement. Key spaces incorporated into North District 2 include Residential Suites, Shared Community Resources, Study Lounges, Student Support Centers, Administrative Offices, and Building Operations Support. The project also features new outdoor recreation areas and improved pedestrian connectivity throughout the district.  

GMC Commissioning Support and Delivery 

Specialty systems commissioned by GMC Cx include a high-efficiency heat pump based hot water heater, HVAC system, backup generator, and advanced building automation systems. 

GMC Commissioning provided LEED Enhanced commissioning services for North District 2, ensuring optimal performance and sustainability. GMC Cx tested the Domestic Water Systems, Building Management System (BMS), HVAC equipment, lighting, and controls. GMC Cx’s advanced analytics platform delivers comprehensive HVAC performance testing and ongoing support for facilities maintenance. The custom-developed Skyspark analytics have delivered measurable value to UC Riverside by reducing utility costs, improving occupant comfort, and streamlining maintenance operations.
